How Air Source Heat Pumps Work

Air source heat pumps work by capturing heat from the outside air and transferring it into your home to provide heating and hot water. Even when temperatures are low, there is still heat energy in the air that can be used effectively.

The system uses a refrigerant to absorb this heat, which is then compressed to increase its temperature. This heat is transferred into your home’s heating system, whether that’s radiators, underfloor heating, or your hot water cylinder. Once the heat has been delivered, the cycle repeats continuously, providing a steady and efficient source of warmth.

Unlike traditional boilers that generate heat by burning fuel, air source heat pumps move heat, making them far more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly.

How the process works:

Heat is absorbed from the outside air – The outdoor unit draws in air and captures available heat energy.
Refrigerant increases the temperature – The system compresses the heat to raise it to a usable level.
Heat is transferred into your home – Warmth is distributed through radiators, underfloor heating, or hot water systems.
